Surya Namaskar – literally means salutations to the sun. This set of 12 postures forms a nice link between warm-ups and asanas. A few rounds of sun salutations done at a fast pace can give you a good cardiovascular workout, whereas when they are done at a slower pace can be a very meditative and relaxing. Daily practice of Surya Namaskar helps balance Vata, Pitta and Kapha, thus keeping the body in perfect health.
It also provides an opportunity for us to be grateful. Without the sun, life on this planet would be impossible. Being grateful to the Sun as we do the Sun salutations, and remembering throughout our practice that there are higher powers that are responsible for life, adds sacredness to our practice.
It is recommended to do 12 rounds of Surya Namaskar every day.
