India is blessed by a treasure of great tinkers and poets who have showered the nation with their wisdom and intellect. Overcoming the artificial barriers of caste, creed and colour, they have preached the concept of universal brotherhood, peace and divine love. The four unforgettable religious thinkers and philosophers of India who have been at the centre of intellectual and religious attention are Kabir, Meera, Tulsidas and Surdas. Their contribution in the philosophical and religious realms can never be ignored and their timeless teachings are remembered, respected and followed even today. In fact, their erudition always sparks many interpretations, commentaries and discussions that have been continuously enriching the Indian religious and philosophical traditions.

Tulsidas: Poet – philosopher Tulsidas, an Awadhi poet and philosopher, was born in Rajpur, in the district of Banda in Uttar Pradesh, in Samvat 1589 or 1532 A.D, during the reign of Humayun. He wrote numerous books and is considered the greatest and the most famous of Hindi poets.
Tulsidas was extremely and passionately attached to his wife Buddhimati until the day she said “If you would develop for Lord Ram even half the love that you have for my filthy body, you would certainly cross the ocean of Samsara and attain immortality and eternal bliss”. These words pierced his heart. He abandoned home, became an ascetic, and spent fourteen years visiting various sacred places, purifying his thoughts and ways. It is said that Tulsidas met Lord Hanuman and through him had a vision of Lord Ram.
Tulsidas is best remembered for writing Ramcharitmanas, an epic devoted to Lord Ram. He wrote this inspiring book containing coupets in beautiful rhyme called’ chaupai’, believed to be under the directions of Lord Hanuman. A personification of humility, he declares in the Manas that he is no poet and he is imperfect and only sings the excellence of Ram according to his poor wit and understanding. This is the case in his other works Gitavali (1571), Kavitavali (1612), Barvai Ramayana (1612) and one of the best works, Vinaya Patrika (a request of Ram). However, he should not be considered partial to Ram in exclusion to others. He appreciated the diverse tenets of Saiva, Advaita and Samkhya philosophies as well.

Goswami Tulsidas emerged on the scene with the revival of one of the greatest epics of all times, The Ramayan. Through his inspired writings he reoriented and simplified the story of Lord Rama with the strong message of victory of good over evil. This album journeys through the life of Tulsidas and tells how one small incidence was to change the course of his life. It became the motivation for his spiritual quest and inspired him to compose his magnum opus – The Ram Charit Manas.
