In the realm of Hindustani classical ragas, Raga Yaman is assigned a singular position as one of the most fundamental ragas & is also considered as one of the most important raga among all other ragas. Ragas Yaman is said to be originated from kalyan thaat and is also the primary raga of this particular thaat. Nowadays, in many traditions this is the first raga to be taught even before the basic raga Bilawa. Another existing form of Yaman, named yaman Kalyan is also a very popular raga. Though there is a very minor difference in their basic swara structure but both the ragas are often considered to be same by many modern musicologist. Raga Yaman is particular sung in the evening and the nature or mood of this raga is considered to be very soft & romantic sometimes even devotional. This raga is appropriate for singing the core forms such as khayal dhamar & dhrupad.
