About the CD

In Meowat region of east Rajasthan, Ramkatha is recounted by professional performers in songs with instrumental music. The presenters are called Jogis who recite the story in their local language, using sarangi, harmonium and dholak. The patrons, for whom they perform, belong to Meo Jatti and royal families. The performance begins with a “quawali”, but the presentation includes various froms of singing, interspersed with loud narration by the leader. The performers have made their own changes and alterations in the story.

This is a style of Ramayana a presentation prevalent in some parts of Rajasthan. The performers have made their own changes in the story e.g. Ravana is not killed by Rama but by Lakshmana. The birth stories of Rama as well as Sita are added. The narration is mixed with devotional songs and some stories of royal families are introduced. The influence of Shastriya Sangeet is marked.
