About the CD

Raag Bageshree & Raag Misha Piloo

Purbayan Chatterjee – Sitar
Pt. Anindo Chatterjee – Tabla

Purbayan started performing from age 5 and has had an international career of more than 25 years today. He ahs learnt sitar from his father Parthapratim Chatterjee and Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. He has also trained in vocal music from Pt. Ajoy Chakrabarty and in rhythm from Pt. Anindo Chatterjee. Purbayan’s music is inspired by the style of Pt. Nikhil Chatterjee of the Senia Maihar Gharana. Purbayan has toured extensively in all the continents of the world in many prestigious festivals and venues. He has developed a sound of his own which embodies the completeness of Pt. Nikhil Banerjee and is enhanced by the contemporary feel of his own sensitivity.

This is live recording of a concert in Kolkata Purbayan has shared a relationship with Anindo ji which goes back many years. Anindo ji is one of Purbayan’s gurus and being a very close friend of his father is also like a member of the family. That chemistry comes across in this particular performance.

The build up of Raga Bagheshree is gentle & grand at the same time during the alaap and Jod. In the gat however there is an exuberance and lyricism as is characteristic of Purbayan’s style of music. Anindo ji’s rhythmic analysis in the roopak taal composition is witty, intricate and yet made to look absolutely lucid.

The Dadra in Mishra Piloo is in contrast to the classical structure of Bagheshree. There is a lighter more romantic approach in this composition.
