The music of Purab Ang and the city of Benaras have a long and traditional association. The folk songs of this area have been the basis of its unique and incomparable forms such as the seasonal Hori, Chaiti, Kajri and Sawani. Yet the exponents of Purab Ang can render with equal ease a khayal a lyrical thumri or lilting dadra. Stylistically Purab Ang has a characteristic sweetness brought out by dwelling on musical phrases and the ringing clarity of the pukar.
On this album we feature the voice of Chhannulal Mishra a consummate musician with a rich and wide ranging repertoire. He had his early training in music from his father Pandit badri Prasad Mishra and then from Ustad Abdul Ghani Khan of the Kirana Gharana. He also sought the guidance of the great musicologist Thakur Jaidev Singh. But the distinctive vocal style is his own evolved and polished over the years and enhanced through the pursuit of aesthetic subtlety.
