About the CD

Jantra is a trust. When devotion is mixed with trust and any goal is achieved through that faith, then it is said that the work of Jantra is completed. By embracing Jantra, we become more "real," more "complete." By recognizing and stimulating our inherent spirituality, we discover parts of ourselves that have remained asleep or have been repressed. Bhajan is one of the forms of Jantra that awakens our senses and gently invokes the soul, initiating the process of self-realization and self-enlightenment.

The singing of Bhajans or devotional songs is a very ancient tradition in India. Most of these bhajans contain complex spiritual truths expressed in simple language in the praise of God. They contain a lineage of teachings and consistently singing them helps the devotee to focus on the doctrine of truth and wisdom contained therein. Bhajans are difficult to describe musically because they are not defined by any musical characteristics; instead they are defined by a sense of devotion (bhakti). They cover a broad spectrum of musical styles from the simple musical chant (dhun) to highly developed versions comparable to a thumri.

In this album, through the renditions of bhajans, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi has fully succeeded in establishing a link from the heart of a devotee to god, thus enabling the devotee to experience the supreme happiness. He jolts into life our dormant senses and completes the work of Jantra. Immerse in his musical strains to identify and stimulate your innate spirituality thus experiencing spiritual ecstasy!

About the Artistes

Acknowledged as the leading light of the Kirana Gharana, Pandit Bhimsen Gururaj Joshi is a sheer musical marvel whose singing invariably provides listeners with a divine musical experience. Born in 1922 into a conservative Brahmin family in Gadag, Karnataka, Bhimsen Joshi displayed the signs of being a musical genius from an early age. He ran away from home and started learning music at the age of 11 against his father's wishes. But when his father became aware of Bhimsen's talent in singing and his fervent desire for knowledge in music, he made arrangements for him to learn under the guidance of Sawai Gandharva of Kundol, a pupil of Abdul Karim Khan.

His natural tuneful voice received further polish under the tutelage of his guru and with relentless riyaaz, his gayaki began to shine with a new luminescence that has dazzled the entire country. Through his amazing absorption of the soul of various gayaki styles, he has created a unique musical blend, adding his own introspective aesthetic sense to it that is intriguing, structured and innovative all at once. For over four decades now, he has been leading the renaissance of Indian classical music with the passion and power of a singer drenched in single pointed thirst for music. He has been honoured with numerous awards and titles such as the Padma Shree and Padma Bhushan by the Government of India and the Sangeet Natak Akademi award amongst others.
