M. Balamurali Krishna

Mangalampalli Balamurali Krishna, born in 1930 was named Murali Krishna, but was called'Bala' meaning'young boy' by a senior performer. This prefix has ever since become a part of his name. A child prodigy, Balamurali Krishna started giving vocal performances at a very young age. He was however, also very versatile in playing several instruments such as the violin, mridangam, veena and kanjira. Son of a famous flautist, Mangalampalli Pattabhiramayya, Balamurali had his early training in music and talent, Balamurali’s father allowed him to dedicate his life to the art.

Balamurali Krishna was soon a famed vocalist, performing at various venues in the South of India. He is credited with the discovery and innovation of new ragas such as Janasammodini, Omkari and Lavangi among others. He composed a detailed work on the 72 melakarta system at the young age of 14, which earned him great recognition amongst critics and connoisseurs alike.

This well-travelled musician took carnatic music to great heights with his performances in prestigious venues all over the world including USA, Canada, Singapore, France, U.K and Italy.

He is one of the few Carnatic musicians with an astounding range, stretching upto 3 octaves. His in-depth understanding of shruti, laya and tala, has enabled him to collaborate with musicians of the North in rendering some of the finest jugalbandi-s.

He was awarded the prestigious Sangeeta Kalanidhi title by the music academy in 1947. He has also been honoured with several other awards including the coveted Padma Vibhushan by the Indian Government and the Chevalier des arts et des letters by the French Government.
