About The Artist

Pandit Bhimsen Joshi is a legendary classical singer. He is one of the greatest torchbearers of the Kirana gharana. A remarkable vocalist in his own right, he has been at the centre stage of the renaissance of Indian classical music. His complete mastery over ragas and unique singing style makes him unparallel in his field. His soul-stirring rendition is purely magical and provides listeners with a divine musical experience.

Born on 14 February 1922, in Gadag (Karnataka), Bhimsen had passion for music right from his childhood. At a very young age he happened to listen to a recording of Ustad Abdul Karim Khan of Kirana gharana. He was so inspired by the great master’s singing that he decided to get deep into music. He left home in 1932 in search of guru. He traveled to Bijapur, Pune and gwalior, where the tutored under Ustad Haafiz Ali Khan, the well known sarod player and father of Ustad Amjad Ali Khan. In 1936, Bhimsen Joshi started his rigorous training under Sawai Gandharva (Pandit Rambhan Kundgolkar), the eminent Khayal singer & student of Abdul Karim Khan at Kundgol, near Gadag. Under him Bhimsen Joshi learnt the basics of Khayal singing. The tutoring spanning several years, honed his inborn talent and helped him attain mastery over ragas. His hard work and dedication were rewarded and Bhimsen Joshi emerged as one of the greatest classical vocalists to date. His debut performance was in 1950, during a conference held in the honour of his guru Sawai gandharva. He picked up his first first platinum disk in 1986.

He has improvised and combined ragas to form new ragas like the Kalashri (Kalavati and Rageshri) and Lalit Bhatiyar (Lalit Bhatiyar Ragas) and has also developed a unique style of singing, adapting characteristics from other gharanas. His effortless rendering of gamaks, meends and tanakriyas in his deep resonant voice is most appealing to his deep resonant voice is most appealing to his despite his marvelous and unusual improvisations.
