Raga Miyan Ki Malhar

A popular Monsoon raga, Miyan Ki Malhar is said to have been composed by the great Miyan Tansen, one of the nine gems at the court of the greatest of Mughal emperors, Akbar Miyan Malhar is considered to be the main representative of the Malhar Ragas that are characterized by slow glides and oblique improvisations. A melancholy raga its beauty lies in the use of both Shuddha (Natural) and Komal (Flat) ‘Ni’ Linked together in a phrase and Komal (Flat) ‘Ga’ that is omitted in the ascent but highlighted in the descent with a slight gamak. Its Vadi (Most frequently used note) is ‘Ma’ and Samvadi (Second – Most frequently used note) is ‘Sa’ Several time one tends to confuse Miyan Ki Malhar with Raga Bahar. However there is a vast difference in the ascent descent the usage of ‘Ga’ and Pace at which these ragas are rendered.

Raga Lalit

A prachina raga Lalit is among the most influential members of the Hindustani community for in it is embedded the seminal idea of both the shuddha and tivra ‘Ma’ ‘Pa’ is omitted in this raga. ‘Re’ is Komal (Flat) while the rest of the notes are Shuddha. Its Vadi (Most frequently used note) is ‘Sa’ Lalit or Lalat as many may call it is a complex raga with a highly vakra build. The mere presence of consecutive madhyams per se does not establish Lalit anga: the key lies in the intonation and punctuation.
