Vocal: Suresh Wadkar The Mantra – A Heaven fro peace and Refuge Mantram trayate iti mantraha. The word mantra is derived from two Sanskrit words. The first is manas or mind which provides the man syllable. The second syllable is drawn from the Sanskrit word trai which means to protect or to free from. Thus a recited mantra is meant to protect the person who recites it as well as the listener. On a more esoteric level it means to free the mind. It can be used as a powerful tool to free one from the whims and inconsistencies of a capricious mind. It is believed that at a deeper level the subconscious mind is a repository of all the forms of primitive consciousness which reside empower them to delve into these subconscious thoughts that have come together in our organs and glands and transform these bodily parts into depositories of tranquility and peace. Small wonder thus that certain mantras word like magic on mental problems and even bodily ailments. The efficacy of a mantra depends on the manner in which it is uttered. The utterance of a mantra without knowledge of its meaning is a mere movement of the lips and nothing more. For it is believed that without knowledge of the meaning the mantra sleeps and is not potent. Only when it is chanted with full awareness of its meaning does the mantra awaken like a sleeping giant and becomes vibrant to permeate in the very being of the worshipper.
