Alap – the initiation, aims at bringing out the specific traits of the raga. Music has its own grammar, and Fahim-du-din explains the basic concepts and language of music. Every ‘raga’ has its own ‘muqam’ or position. Raga Bharavi is an obeisance to sun, a tribute to light. But it has no words, because, ‘sur’ can’t tolerate the burden of words. ‘Vidya’ or knowledge is necessary, but one must have a guru, a teacher.
