About the Artiste:
Pt. Mallikarjun Mansur was one of the greatest exponents of the Jaipur – Atrauli Gharana of Hindustani Khayal singing.
Pt. Mansur imbibed his early training from Pt. Nilkanth Bua of Miraj who belonged to the Gwalior Gharana. However, his singing style was greatly influenced by his Gurus Ustad Manji Khan and Ustad Bhurji Khan, the sons of Ustad Alladiya Khan, one of the most respected doyens of the Jaipur Gharana.
The intensity Pt. Mansur brought to his music was magical and reflected in the treatment of melody. A new creative impulse in each of his rendering mesmerized his audiences.
His musical prowess earned him the Kalidas Samman, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, the Padmashree, the Padmavibhushan and several other titles.
Pt. Mansur penned an autobiographical book in Kannada, titled Nanna Rasayatre. This has been translated into English by his son, Rajshekhar Mansur and is called My Journey in Music, Rajshekhar Mansur has been a disciple of his illustrious father and is presently the torchbearer of his musical style.
About the Music
The opening Raga Bahaduri Todi is an exceedingly beautiful morning Raga, known for its aesthetic unity inspite of its complicated structure. Pt. Mansur’s breath taking rendition of this rare Raga is a treat to the connoisseur.
Gaud Malhar brings forth the monsoon magic and transports the listener to a world of charm and enchantment.
The concluding morning melody in Raga Yamani Bilawal, as the name suggests, is a combination of Ragas Yaman and Bilawal. Pt. Mansur’s brilliant rendition leaves the audiences aspiring for more!
