About the CD

Evergreen Yaman
Yaman is an ancient Hindustani raga, the origin of which is obscure. It is a sampoorna raga with all the Shuddha Swars except for the Tivra “Ma”. “Ga” and “Ni” are its Vaadi-Samvaadi Notes and ‘Ni’, ‘Re’ ‘Ga’ is its Pakad. It corresponds to raga Kalyani in Carnatic discipline of music. Its also corresponds to a mode in Western (Greek) Music. As a Hindustani Raga, it is associated with evening. However, it has universal all time appeal. A beginner generally starts with ‘Yaman’, however veterans also consider it to be a raga of ‘riyaz’ and “realization”. Consequent upon its unfathomable depths it is popular with Classical Vocalists, Semi - Classical Artistes and Light Music Singers. Enjoying raga Yaman on a stringed instrument (Sitar) and a wind instrument (Shehnai) will give a tranquil experience to the listeners.

USTAD VILAYAT KHAN
Ustad Vilayat Khan belongs to the Etawah Gharana of Been Surbahar and Sitar. Ustad Vilayat Khan was born in Gauripur (now is Bangladesh) on a Janmashtami Day sometime in mid-twenties of the twentieth century. He was trained by his father Inayat Khan, mother Bashiran Begum, maternal grandfather Bande Hasan Khan, uncle Vahid Khan and his father’s disciple Prof. Joshi. Ustadji’s grandfather Imdad Khan used to play Alaap, Jod and Jhala on Surbahar and gat, Tantode and Jhala on Sitar. Ustad Vilayat Khan blended both into his sitar playing by developing new ‘Zerbs’ of ‘Mizrab’. That made Ustadji different from the other sitar players of his time. Ustadji’s noted disciples include Pt. Arvind Parikh, Benjamin Gome, Bindu Zaveri, Imrat Khan (brother), Shujaat Khan and Hidayat Khan (sons) and Raees Khan (nephew).

USTAD BISMILLAH KHAN
Ustad Bismillah Khan belongs to Mian Vilayatu Gharana (of Shehnai) of Benaras. He was born on March 21, 1916 in Dumraon in Bihar. Qamaruddin Khan, son of Ustad Paigambar Bux Khan later became famous as Ustad Bismillah Khan, the master magician of Shehnai. Dhrupad singers Ahmed Khan of Lucknow and Pt. Lakshmiprasadji of Benaras, Shehnai player brothers Allan Khan (Ali Bux) - Vilayat Hussain Khan (Mian Vilayatu) and Sadiq Ali who also happened to be his maternal uncles and Ustad Mohammad Hussain, a vocalist from Delhi were his Gurus. Ustad Bismillah Khan gives through his instrument glimpses of vocal music and dance too. He has imbibed in Shehnai the qualities of other instruments like Sitar, Sarod, Sarangi, Violin, Been and Bansuri. Ustadji elevated Shehnai from being a religious temple instrument to be a concert instrument. He can communicate to laymen and connoisseur with equal ease. Imdad Hussain, Jagdeesh Prasad and Bageshri Qamar are the noted disciples of Ustad Bismillah Khan.
