Echoes From the Valley

A valley is such a design of the nature where even a lonely caller is not alone. A valley multiplies and fortifies the caller’s call and widens his profile. When the nature repeats a human call, the intensity of the call increases. It is believed that music, in its own jargon, imitates life. It is more so if the music is played on folk instruments, because folk instruments are prepared by the people closer to the nature. Santoor, now developed and established by Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma as a concert instrument, was basically a folk instrument of the Kashmir valley. The flow and lightness of the sound of Santoor has an association with the movements in the nature.

Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma

Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma was born on January 13, 1938 in the state of Jammu & Kashmir. Basically he had learnt Vocal music and he was a much sought after accomplished Tabla player too. His father Pt. Umadutt Sharma had introduced Santoor to classical music. But this instrument was destined to flourish through Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma. Panditji improved the instrument to such a level that it crossed its inherent limitations. The new instrument the international level.

Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma is a worshipper of beauty with a spiritual blend of mind. He has always tried to translate into his music the nature’s expressions. Panditji’s Santoor catches the human emotions bolstered by the nature. Here we have compiled some thematic recordings, some classical dhuns and a score for a movie where the echoes of sound of the sentiments have been aesthetically captured by Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma.
