Daughter of Dr. Sushila Pohankar, a renowned scholar of Indian classical music, Swati Natekar’s tryst with music, be it classical, light classical, ghazals, folk or devotional music started at an early age. A regular performer on All India Radio and Doordarshan, Swati moved to London in 1990. There she collaborated with various Indian artists including Zakir Hussain (Little Buddha-The Secret Score), Muzaffer Ali (Paigham-e-Mohabbat), Sonu Nigam (Kismat) and Buddu (Farebi/Kismat). Her improvised alaaps have provided an Indian finesse to some highly successful tracks like Nitin Swhney’s “Nadia” & Talvin Singh’s “It’s not over”. She has also worked with house producers and American rappers as well as with some of the most respected Asian and European soundtrack composers involvement with other generes of music, Swati is keen to continue performing and recording as much classical based work as her schedule permits. She recently collaborated with her brother, Pandit Ajay Pohankar on a Thumri album “Birha”.
It is her natural flair for ghazals and love of this genre that prompted her to write her own ghazal album, Dhanak, introduced by Ustad Ghulam Ali-who together with other well respected music veterans, has acknowledged her emotional and lyrical understanding and beautifully controlled delivery. Swati’s ability to create lucid compositions based on her classical upbringing, coupled with her rich voice is creating a pivotal combination that attracts the young and old generations Swati’s distinct interpretation of this highly charged poetic genre, in many ways.
Signals the rebirth of a field which some see as unfashionable and too serious, hereby signaling a new wave in popular semi classical music aimed at both the Indian and World Asian market.
1. Aaj kisi ne baataon – baton mein jab unka naam liya: Dil ne jaise thokar khaayi, dard ne badh kar thaam liya. Ghar se daaman jhaad ke nikle, wahashat ka saamaan na pooch, Yaani gard –e-raah se humne, rakht –e- safar ka kaam liya. Raah – e – taalab mein chalet – chalet, thak kar jab hum choor huye, Zulf ki thandi chhaaon mein baithe pal do pal aaraam liya. 2. Maikhana-e-hasti mein aa kar hum apna thikana bhool gaye, Ya hosh mein aana bhool gaye, ya hosh mein jaana bhool gaye. Aabaab to ban hi jaate hain, tagdee kizad ko kya kahiye, Ek jam to pahuncha tha hum tak, hum jam uthaana bhool gaye Aaye the bikhere zulfon ko ek roz hamare marqad par, Do ashq to to tapke aankho se, do phool chadhana bhool gaye. 3. Apni marzi se kahan apne safar ke hum hain, Rukh hawaaon ka jidhar ka hai udhar ke hum hain. Pehle har cheez thi apni, magar ab lagta hai, Apne hi ghar mein kisi doosre ghar ke hum hain. Waqt ke saath hai mitti ka safar sadiyon se, Kisiko maaloom kahan ke hain, kidhar ke hum hain. Chalte rahte hain, ke chalna hai musaafir ka naseeb, Sochte rahte hain, kis raah-guzar ke hum hain. 4. Raat tanha hai, aasmaa tanha, tum nahin ho, to hai jahan tanha. Jaane kisko sadaayen dete hain, mera dil aur meri jaan tanha. Aag bhi saath chhod jaati hai, ghutke reh jaata hai dhuan tanha. Main wahin intezar karti hoon, chhod kart um gaye jahan tanha. Lyricist : Rahat Indori.
5. Kaam aa sakin na apni wafaayen to kya Karen, ek bewafa ko bhool na jaayen to kya Karen. Ek din ki baat ho, to use bhool jaayen hum, naazil hon dil per oz balaayen to kya Karen. Shab bhar to unki yaad mein tare gina kiye, tare-se din ko bhi nazar aayen to kya Karen. Ab jee mein hai ke unko bhula kar hi dekh len, Lyricist: Akhtar Shirani.
6. ek lafz-e-mohabbat ka adna-sa fasaana hai, simte to dil-e-aashiq, phaile to zamaana hai. Hum ishq ke maaron ka itna hi fasaana hai, rone ko nahin koi, hasne ko zamana hai. Ashqon ke tabassum mein, aahon ke tarannum mein, maasoom mohabbat ka maasoom fasaana hai. Ya who the khafaa humse, ya hum the khafaa unse, kal unka zamaana tha, aaj apna zamaana hai, Lyricist : Jigar Muradabadi.
7. Raat bhi kitne haseen khwab dikhaati hai humen, chaandni mein teri soorat nazar aati hai humen. Kya qayamat hai ke deewaana banaaya jisne, uske daaman ki hawaa hosh mein laati hai humen. Ek lamhe mein judaa ho gayin raahen apni, ek chhoti si mulaaqaat rulaati hai humen. Jaane kis aas pe hai tum se bichhad kar zindaa, tum jo roothe ho to duniya bhi sataati hai humen.Lyricist : Qaiser-ul-jaafri.
In Urdu means a rainbow, which has seven colours in it. My first solo album, Dhanak consists of 7 carefully chosen compositions of mine so this title is just appropriate. These tracks use a mix of traditional lyrics with modern music arrangement. Also there are some, which were composed by me after meeting a musical legend. This is how the track “Kaam aa sakin” was composed after I met the king of Ghazals, Jagjit Singh.
Perhaps the best moment in my life was when the Ghazal maestro Ghulam Aliji happily consented to present the introduction for Dhanak-The Rainbow, an album that was recorded in Mumbai.
