Farida Khanum
Farida Khanum is a celebrated ghazal queen of Pakistan. After Begum Akhtar, Farida Khanum’s voice has the most character in the genre. She has undoubtedly created a landmark in ghazal singing.
Farida Khanum was born in Calcutta and grew up in Amritsar. As a child she was trained in classical and light classical music by her sister Muqtar Begum. Afterwards, she received training from Ashiq Ali Khan, a reputed maestro of Patiala gharana.
She migrated to Pakistan in 1947. In 1950, she appeared in her first public concert where she shared the stage with stalwart singers like Zeenat Begum and Iqbal Begum.
Farida Khanum was remarkably influenced by Begum Akhtar, Barkat Ali Khan and Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. This does not go unnoticed in her gayaki by her discerning audiences.
She has created niche for herself in ghazal and thumri gayaki. A tinge of huskiness in her voice, though heavy at times is like a feather that tickles. Her ghazals, in pure form of ragas with an aesthetic appeal and layakari, with total control over breath have always regaled the audiences. Her excellent selection of lyrics for Tabassum and Shakeel adds a lot to her renditions. Unforgettable songs like Aaj Jane Ki Zid Na Karo, and Who Mujhse Huey Hum Qalam are engraved in the minds of the connoisseurs.
