So wrote Kalidasa of this most joyful of seasons in his immortal poem, the Ritusumhara, Vasanta, Lord of the Spring, dances in the Garden of Love surrounded by beautiful ladies; and the Raga Basant is depicted as golden - hued and clad in yellow garments, his ears ornamented with mango blossoms.
Yellow is the predominant colour of this season of youth, beauty and flowering gardens. Beginning with Basant Pancham if when prayers are offered to Saraswati, Goddess of Learning, springcelebrations end with Holi, the festival of colors. In the Durgahs of the Sufi saints, Basanti chuddars and flowers were offered and quwwalis sung.
Above all, this is the season of music, dance and poetry, both classical and folk. Hori, Rasia and Dhammal, as also the ragas Basant, Bahar and Hindol, are the best known musical expressions of the romantic lyricism of Spring.
Raga Bhavani Bahar Khayal, Madhyalaya in JhaptaalPandit Jasraj This is a combination of Raga Durga (Bhavani) and Bahar. It creates an emotion for me a singer that is both awesome and moving.
Raga Adi Basan Khayal from Haveli Sangeet in taal Deepchandi
Pandi JasrajAdi Basant literally means an ancient form of Basant. Here both rishabhs and madhyams are used one after another to create a telling effect on the listener.
Raga Shahana Bahar Alap, Madhyalaya and Drut in teentaalHariprasad ChaurasiaA combination of the ragas Shahnna and Bahar in a romantic mood.
Pahadi Dhun Hariprasad Chaurasia
Pahadi is not traditionally associated with the season Bahar but for me this was a completely spontaneuous response to the feeling of basant.
The rich panorama of the Indian musical heritage offers resplendent ragas to suit the myriad moods of our seasons.
Music of the seasons is a celebration of the two most emotive and colorful times of the year Basant (Spring) and Malhar (Mansoon). Basant Bahar Captures the brilliant freshness of flowers in full bloom. And megh Malhar echoes the majesty and romance of the rains.
