Migrating from Central Asia, the Mughals were once complete strangers to India. Not familiar with the flora and fauna of this land they found the huge, strange looking animal called the elephant particularly fascinating. Their inane curiosity and interest initiated the Mughal artist's study of animals and birds, and their portrayal with realism.

This miniature is single in composition, dominating the whole picture plane. It accommodates the central theme more spaciously in order to allow maximum detail. The main figure is replete with an extravaganza of color. The elephant is most luxuriously caparisoned in jewel encrusted gold, with pearl tassels, gold chains for the neck and the hind part and a richly designed over-cloth. Detail has been observed to the minutest ring in the tusk of the elephant. The raised tail indicates its preparedness for a tug of war.

Careful study of the miniature shows a shading at the base of the tree, representing its rootedness . The same coloring under the elephant's feet portrays the firm grip it's feet have on the ground. The tree is not in a representational form. That is because its purpose is not a study of flora. The swaying, whirling leaves show the force with which the elephant is tugging at it. The tree is weak, not requiring much force to uproot. It is thus clear that the intent is not to draw attention to the strength, but the beauty and majesty of this royal pachyderm.

The quality of detail and the dexterous rendering of colors indeed brings out the characteristic lively effect of the subject.
