A pole fixed on a broad base holds twin triangular flags. They belong to a Shaivite temple and their association with Shiva is evident by the serpents embossed on the surface on either sides of the flags. The nagas have been frequently incorporated into temple iconography. Their presence is considered auspicious and believed to produce fertility, abundance and paradoxically, protection from snakes. No other Indian god is as intimately connected and profusely associated with serpents as is Shiva. They show the power of Shiva to deal with death but also to hold the sexual energy of kundalini, the yogic serpent power.
This flag, beside being a fine example of superb craftsmanship, is a temple accessory, mainly acquired for its auspicious symbolic value.
