Kalamkari relates exclusively to the category of cotton fabric which are patterned through the medium of dye rather than the loom. Although kalamkari lacks the opulence of silk, velvet or brocade, its vivid colours more than make up for it.

Saraswati, the goddess of learning and culture, is a very well known deity. She has various other names such as Vak, Vagdevi, Bharati, Vani etc. As the goddess of culture and learning, she was popular among the flowers of Brahmanical religion, as well as among the Buddhists and the Jains. Here she is represented sitting on a lotus, the stalk of which is immersed in water. She is sitting with one leg pendant playing the veena. The veena itself is depicted beautifully ending in a swan's head. The goddess is shown here as a beautiful woman in profile, with lotus like eyes, curling locks of hair cupping her face, and wearing an elaborate crown. Slim of body and delicate limbs, she holds her attributes, the book and a rosary in the two backhands. With a halo around the head, she sits under a tri-folio arch.

Saraswati's vehicle, the swan is represented near her feet, floating on water. The normally pristine white swan is shown in various bright colours in order to enhance the visual effect of this kalamkari work. The red in the background forms an apt colour to allow yellow and blue to display themselves with good effect.
