Inspired by the representations of Yoginis (powerful female goddesses) in Newari Thangkas, this oil painting depicts the goddess Kali in her four-armed form, within a fiery halo which symbolizes the powers of divine consciousness. Devi Kali wears the Mundamala (garland of heads) and girdle of hands and stands on Lord Shiva who is draped in Baghambara (tiger skin) and wears a distinctive Nepalese five-pronged crown on his head. Ferocious yet benevolent, goddess Kali in Hindu thought is the supreme mother goddess who protects her children from all evil.
