Ragamala paintings appear to stand at a crossroad of Indian music, poetry and miniature paintings with the names of musical modes. There are six principal ragas. A major raga is classified as a male and the subordinate raga as the wife of the raga, called the ragini.

The word 'deepak' means a flame. According to legend, Tansen, the famous court musician of Akbar, started a palace fire when he was ordered to sing Deepak against his own better judgement.

Reclining against a bolster in a languorous mood is ragini Deepika. With a delicate and attractive body, she smiles with eyes full of love. She gazes at the flame seeing her lover's face in it. She sits cross-legged on the terrace, playing her musical instrument as the sun sets in the background. The pink blossoms are symbols of youth, life and joy whereas the white plum blossoms symbolize spiritual strength and beauty. Ragini Deepika is the combination of the two.
