Saraswati sits poised atop a swan. The swan is known in Sanskrit as hamsa. The word hamsa is made up of ha and sa, the m being formed by the conjoining of these two syllables. In yoga ha represents the outgoing breath and sa the incoming one. Also the swan in Hindu mythology is believed to be the bird which can fly from earth to heaven, linking the realms of mortals with those of deities. The typical Indian swan is a graceful, stately and long necked bird. It has red beak and a snow white body. The artist has faithfully captured these characteristics.

In one of her arms she holds a noose (lasso), known in Sanskrit as pasha. It signifies the capacity of the goddess to capture our ignorance, enabling us to gain the wisdom of knowledge. Another hand supports a goad. It is a symbol of the deity's ability to steer our motives and actions in the righteous direction. The pot (kalasha) symbolizes the abundance of wisdom which is but the specific boon of Goddess Sarasawati.

The entire composition is divided into three layers. In the foreground is the image of Saraswati herself; the middle layer has a lotus pond blooming with pink flowers, and finally in the background are a groups of hermits performing various activities in keeping with their holy status.
