On the auspicious occasion a marriage, the women in the family decorate the bridal room with bright coloured paintings. Each shape and every figure denote one thing or the other. In this painting, the traditional kohbar ghar motif of the lotus known as the 'purain' is centrally placed. This multipetalled lotus has the image of Vishnu holding all his attributes and has Lakshmi lovingly caressing his feet. Even in a limited space, detail has been taken care of. Blessing the newly married couple that they love each other like the divine couple, the image is important.
The artist here has departed from the repetitive painting of magic symbols, ritual motifs and iconography connected with the kohbar ghar, in favour of more experimental and innovative work. Around the motif are scenes from everyday life and items of an ordinary household. The names of the items have been given below each one. With the availability of paper, the women no longer confine themselves to painting the ritual kohbar ghar with their limited vocabulary of symbols and images but as seen in this painting, they investigate the unlimited potentiality offered by drawing line.
