Hanuman, popular throughout India, was held in particular reverence in Sri Lanka and Bali. He plays an eminent role in the epic Ramayana where he is acknowledged to have assisted Rama in his victory over the demon Ravana, helped by Jambavan, the bear and Jatayu, the Vulture. He is a personification of devotion and dedication to his lord, Rama. Here, Hanuman is shown singing hyms in praise of Rama, in front of Rama's slippers, which are symbolic of the god himself for Hanuman. He has sprayed some flowers around the slippers to acknowledge its piety. He kneels down in front of them in obeisance as his mace lies behind him. He is wearing a short loin cloth and a jewel studed crown. He is adorned with bracelets, armlets, anklets and necklaces. In both his hands, he holds wooden claps, a traditional musical tool, used particularly in devotional music.
The richness of the image is contrary to the subdued and soft palette of the background. Due to the light colours, the crackle stands prominently.
