Batik is clearly one of the most complex amongst textile arts. What makes it stand apart from others is the crackle which is obtained by crushing the cloth before the final dye. The process itself is tedious involving innumerable times of waxing and dyeing.

Deciding the theme and the color contrast also require pre-planning. Here, the artist Harikrishen has carefully chosen the theme, that of a woman playing the veena, but a type that approximates the heroine of classical Indian poetry, in which the sensuous even erotic adoration of feminine charm is a dominant theme. Posture and the head jewelry suggest she belongs to a class of professional singers. Unlike other pictures of this genre, the woman does not have a round face and a robust body. Her shapely oval face, the beauty of which is enhanced by the curls cupping it, marks a departure from the norm, as does he slim and long body. The fingers are not unnaturally tapering as they play the instrument.

The subject is adequately bedecked but the actual beauty lies in her downward glance and her full lips. Seemingly adept at her art, she sits straight with legs bent sideways and her veena placed diagonally across her body, ready to charm as much with her art as well as with her looks. A well defined generalized form, a dramatic visual impact and brilliant colors quite sum up the picture.
