Indian literature is treasured for its deep roots, breadth, and flourishing creativity. It all begins with the writing of the Rig Veda, written down more than three thousand years ago. From there, unmatched epics like the Mahabharata and the Ramayana created the basis for storytelling that would go on to inform writers and readers for thousands of years.

Since then, many languages in the area have developed their own literature, introducing new styles while also learning from existing work. This exchange has generated a creativity unseen almost anywhere else, and it is a literary tradition that continues to astound and inspire us to this day.

FAQs

Q1. Which Indian language has the most literature?

There are more than 22 officially recognized languages in India and out of all these, the Kannada language (spoken mainly in the Indian state of Karnataka) has the highest number of literary works. Works of Kannada literature have received eight Jnanpith Awards and forty-seven Sahitya Academy awards. It is believed that literature in the Kannada language started centuries earlier.

Most of the Kannada literary works are based on the principles of Hinduism or commentaries upon Vedic literature such as Srimad Bhagavatam and Bhagavad Gita. These works have been able to reach readers from all types of social classes over the decades.

Q2. Which is the oldest book of Indian literature?

Indian literature is considered the most influential and earliest among all the literary works. The oldest works of Indian literature date back to 5,000 years. These were orally transmitted in the Sanskrit language and were later compiled by Srila Vyasadev which is known as the Vedas. The Vedas were then passed down through bona fide disciplic succession. Among the four main Vedas, the Rig Veda is considered the oldest book comprising texts or verses recited in various ceremonies and sacrifices.
