Pandit Zinda Kaul (A.D. 1884-1966), known as 'Masterji', for he spent his precious life in teaching, was a simple, saintly, unassuming, shy person. He carried the spiritual tradition of Kashmiri poetry to modern times. He was awarded the first Dashmiri award of the Sahitya Akademi for his book of poems, Sumran, in 1956. He wrote poetry in Kashmiri, Urdu, Persian and Hindi. He expressed his deep indebtedness to Hafiz, the Sufi and Rabindranath Tagore. Devotional poetry interested him most. His religious mood was never rigid or narrow; for him Unity of Existence was above any dogma.
