Book Description
Back of the Book

Legendary Yogi T krishnamacharya was an accomplished Sanskrit scholar and poet as well. He composed numerous poems, hymns and commentaries in Sanskrit. Every composition had an occasion behind it, some with intention and some at the request of his disciples. One such literary work is Yoganjalisaram, which is a compilation of verses on Yoga written by him at different times in his life.

The composition, in essence praises Yoga for its contribution in providing physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing. This poem very lucidly crystallises the essential message of patanjali's Yogasutra a text that Krishnamacharya greatly respected and based most of his teachings on.

Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram takes great pride in bringing out this revised edition of T Krishnamacharya's Yoganjalisaram, based on the translation of our teacher and founder, TKV Desikachar. In this revised edition, a commentary on each verse, based on studies with TKV Desikachar, has been included, to clarify to the reader certain points of significance made by the author of the text.

Introduction

Yogi T Krishnamacharya, was also an accomplished Sanskrit scholar and poet. He composed numerous poems, hymns and commentaries in Sanskrit. He had the background of extensive studies in diverse areas of Vedic traditions and philosophy. He had unshakeable faith in his family's tutelary deity, Lord Hayagriva, the God of Knowledge, and the grace of the divine endowed him with the ability to writhe and compose spontaneously in Kannada, Telugu and Sanskrit with great erudition.

every composition had an occasion behind it, some with intention and some at the request of his disciples. One such literary work is Yoganjalisaram, which Krishnamacharya composed on the lines of the famous poem, "Bhaja Govindam" of Adi Sankaracarya in a meter easy for recitation and memorisation.

Like "Bhaja Govindam", this composition aims at providing teaching for the welfare of humanity at large, with special focus on Yoga and its importance. The composition, in essence praises Yoga for its contribution in providing physical and mental health and exposed the belief system of the author. It will be evident that his devotion to Lord Narayana along with His consort, Goddess Laksmi forms a major part of this composition which according to him is both the means and end of yoga.

Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram takes great pride in bringing out this revised edition of T Krishnamacharya's Yoganjalisaram, based on the original translation of TKV Desikachar. At appropriate junctures, certain additional comments, based on studies with our teacher, TKV Desikachar, have been inserted to clarify to the reader certain points of significance made by the author of the text.

We simultaneously release this work, as a book and ebook. Also available is the Yoganjalisaram App that presents the complete text of this publication also with the audio recording of each verse of the text in listen and repeat modes rendered by TKV Desikachar.

We offer this edition of T Krishnamacharya's Yoganjalisaram as a humble Tribute to our teacher and founder, TKV Desikachar who opened the doors of Yoga and the invaluable teachings of T Krishnamacharya to people across the world.

Preface

T Krishnamacharya, in his life of hundred years, served humanity through Yoga. During this time, he wrote numerous works in many languages covering a wide spectrum of our great heritage. Fortunately, some of these manuscripts are still available. The richness of his teachings needs to be shared with all. To discharge this responsibility, the Krishnamacharya Granthamala, a series of his works, has been conceived.

The Yoganjalisaram, the essence of the teachings of yoga, is a collection of verses written by him at different times of his life. Through these verses written by him at different times of his life. Through these verses, we have a compact idea of his holistic teachings. For him, Yoga was not limited to postures, but covered every aspect of human life. It was the means to resolve physical, mental and spiritual problems, ultimately leading to the realisation of the Lord.

We pay our respects to our acarya by beginning the Krishnamacharya Granthamala, the first of the series being Yoganjalisaram.
