In the present century when digital sources are replacing the printed works, this music bibliography has survived. This is the third version of the earlier work "Indian Music Literature" first published in 1991.
The book contains information about..books and articles, over 1000 music theses, with authors and scholars indexes. It is very useful reference tool for providing information that digital sources fail to retrieve because these have not been stored in any data base.
This bibliography is a good reference book for music teachers, research scholars, journalists and students.
Dr. Mohammed Haroon after completing 40 years of his professional career in Librarianship has recently retired as Deputy Librarian from Delhi University Library System, University of Delhi. He has obtained post-graduate degrees in Political Science (1971), Persian (1985) Library and Information Science (1982) and Ph.D in music (2002) from University of Delhi.
Dr. Haroon has authored nine books on library science and music. He has contributed two research papers on Indian Muslim names in international conferences. In addition to this many articles have been published in various Indian journals. Because of his multi disciplinary approach, for his articles, he has ventured into the subjects that are more or less untouched by writers.
Information retrieval was never so easy as is today. The users may get all types of information in minutes through internet on their comput- ers, laptops etc. At this junction when printed materials specially bibliog- raphies are yielding ground to digital sources, I am fortunate to write the preface for third version of my earlier book "Indian Music literature' pub- lished in 1991. For this I feel proud and honoured by music fraternity.
The introduction of formal education at graduate and post-graduate levels has generated demand for degrees in music. The University Grants Commission by insisting on research degrees for appointment and pub- lished works for further promotion has accelerated research activities. Now the users need quick, exact and relevant information about paper and recorded materials. For printed materials, their search is time con- suming and in most cases some important documents remain out of their access. Moreover Indian music journals are not available on the online digital sources provided by UGC or by university libraries subscribed sources. Many reputed journals have ceased publication and except a few rest are irregular in their publication. In this situation this work is an attempt to fill the gap and provide a comprehensive reference tool to the music lectures, researchers and young writers.
