Book Description
About the Book

Srimad Adya Sankaracarya has authored Upanisatbhasya, Brahmasutrabhasya and Bhagvadgitabhasya. Out of these the Word Indices of Brahmasutrabhasy and Bhagvadgitabhasya are available but the word Index to Upanisat-Sankarabhasya has not yet seen the light. Therefore the task to do so was taken up.

The Word Index is mainly useful for the researchers. Basic vocables of verbs and nouns following forms and the reference numbers are mentioned in sequence. Compounds are mentioned along with their components.

It’s a great pleasure to announce the first five principle Upanisads (Isa, Kena, Pada and Vakya), Katha, Prasna and Mundaka in all 6 commentaries.

Vol-I

Preface

It is a point of satisfaction the first volume of Word Index to the Upanisat-Sanskarabhasya is ready for research Project under the funding of Urniversity Grants Commission ,New-Delhi. In the first phase of the project first five oldest Upanisads viz. Isa, Kena (Pada and Vakya bhasya) , Katha, Parsna and Mundaka are covered in the Word – Index to the Upanisat-Sankarabhasya.

Word Index to the Brahmasutha-Sankarabhasya is edited by T.M.P. Mahadevan and Published by Center of Advanced Study in Philosophy, University of Madras, in 1971. Word Index to the Bhagavadgita-Sankarabhasya is also available, edited by Fransa’s X D’sa. S.J. and published by Institute for the study or Religion, Pune, in 1985.

But, Word Index to the Upanisat-Sankarabhasya was awaited till the date. Therefore the task was taken up. Before preparing the Word Index to the Upanisat-Sankarabhasya other two works viz. Brahmasutra- Sankarabhasya and Bhagavadgita-Sankarabhasya ware observed. In these two works the vocables are mentioned and the references are noted. But in Word Index to the Upanisat-Sankarabhasya, a vocable, particular form of the noun or verb and reference numbers are noted, e.g. in the entry of the noun atman, one will find the vocable as atman and successive forms used in the text along with the reference numbers, Same is the case with the verbs. The stem or the basic root and then the forms begin with present tense-first person etc., in the noted. It may be easier to the researcher and an asset to work.

It is a voluminous work, needs some help to complete. It was begun single handedly with the help of Dr. Shailaja Katre. But due to some unforeseen reason she could not continue. Still her help was remarkable, and I am greatful to her for the same. But at times friends like Ms. Bhavana Balte and Dr. Rajashree Mohadikar whole heartedly supported and showed a light Ms. Bhavana Balte was helped in all possible ways to complete it. It is not proper and sufficient to thank, still the help and support will always inspire in future, to take up such magnificent tasks.

Generally the family members are taken for granted but I am really gratefull to my husband Mr. Vasant Mande and encouragement that gives the enthusiasm to complete the work.

Mr. Deepak Subhash Jain, New Bharatiya Publication, Delhi owes sincere thanks for bringing the volume to light.

The suggestion and sincere comments of the researchers are welcome.
