The book Women in Indian History: An Introductory Handbook is designed keeping in mind the Generic Elective paper Women in Indian History of CBCS syllabus, though the book often deals with themes and topics which are beyond the parameters of the syllabus. The book is written specifically keeping in mind students' needs, but scholars and general public can also learn a great deal from the book as it deals with the historical development of women's status and role in India and discusses the reformist movement as well as condition of women in present day India.
Dr. Shweta Singh is an Assistant Professor in Department of History, Dyal Singh College, University of Delhi. Women in Indian History: An Introductory Handbook is her first book, though she has a number of research papers published in reputed journals.
Women in Indian History: An Introductory Handbook is an attempt to draw a picture of the state of women in the history of India as well as to look at the issues that the modern Indian women are going through because of the patriarchal set up of the Indian society and the customs and traditions which suppress and oppress them and makes them victims of different social processes. The Book attempts to trace not only the status of women but also all those contributions of both male reformers as well as women to uplift the status of women in India. A brief account of the feminist discourse is also provided in the Chapter Two so as to understand the ramifications of present day concern of the women.
The Book is designed keeping in mind the syllabus of the General Elective paper of CBCS History Course named Women in Indian History. While an effort has been made to keep the language and the content of the book as student friendly as possible, yet at the same time scholarly interventions on the significant issues are being manifest throughout the book to deal with the specific syllabus of the GE paper on Women in Indian History and yet go beyond the syllabus to understand the issues in their real perspectives.
