Book Description
About the Book
There are numerous street children in Calcutta. Delhi. Bombay. Bangalore. Madras. Secunderabad and other large and medium cities of India. Children can be seen on the street as beggars, ragpickers, servants at small tea shops/dhabas, prostitutes and vendors. Some are engaged in petty crime and some are addicted to drugs. They are often harassed by the police. Some are orphans or runaways.

Several international donor agencies have provided monetary and technical support to national and local level NGOs for various welfare programmes for children, women and marginalised social groups. The help provided has created mass awareness among these under- privileged groups, especially in the field of child education.

The women's new role in services remains unattractive to the women population. It has yet to gain recognition and acceptance from the society at large. It can, however, be made more attractive if the nature of work is made to resemble that of a social workers.

Foreword
The initiatives and support for the eradication of child labour in India, through the government sector, non-government sector, judiciary, social workers and public at large has raised hopes for creating mass movement against the menace of child labour and provide universal compulsory education for children.

Non formal education can be one of the main planks of the strategy for improving the lot of the street or working child. Flexible solutions have to be worked out so that this problem can be tackled without subjecting the families to further economic stress.
