THE WHOLE BEING attempts to draw the portrait of a whole being as distinct from a fragmented being. It explores ways to arrest the fragmentation process at the conceptual level as well as at the level of the deeper consciousness. In the course of this endeavour, it examines different stages of life cycle, three states of consciousness, and how human beings and nature embrace each other in a spirit of wholeness. The book thus helps its readers to comprehend the whole, rediscover their own inner wholeness, and embark on the journey towards enduring happiness and harmony in the outer world.
Some vital sections include the profound explication of wholeness articulated by the Vedic seer-scientists (rishis), as well as the understandings of wholeness in Kashmiri Shaivism and in Buddhism. The author introduces us to a few courageous modern scientists who contrasted the prevailing attempt to divide that which is really indivisible with the wholeness inherent in nature. He also explores in depth the fundamental and commonly misunderstood principle of varna, and the holistic inter-relationships of sound, word, speech and meaning.
The need of the hour is for people of wisdom, as mere knowledge without wisdom to guide us in the utilisation of that knowledge will only make for greater sorrow. This work is offered as a contribution towards the wisdom of our world.
The author of this work, RISHI KUMAR MISHRA, was 'discovered by his guru, the outstanding scholar Pandit Motilal Shastri, unlike the normal practice of a disciple seeking out the guru. In this case, the teacher instilled in his student profound insights into the 'lost' meaning of the messages hidden in the Veda mantras, the eternal verses, before instructing him to return to the world in which he was immersed, to internalise all that he had learned and then to communicate it to the world. This was the most challenging task. The Whole Being and its four predecessors, The Ultimate Dialogue, The Realm of Supraphysics, The Cosmic Matrix and Before the Beginning and After the End, are the result of more than thirty years of that rigorous process.
During this period, the author worked as a journalist, rising to become editor-in-chief of several daily newspapers and weekly magazines with a national and international focus on politics and economics. He was a Member of the Upper House of the Indian Parliament between 1974 and 1980, and had rich and varied experience as a trade unionist, social activist and political adviser.
The Whole Being and its four preceding volumes consist of his most sincere efforts to convey the true meaning and message of the insights gained by the Vedic seer-scientists, with a view to offering the modern world the benefits of this extraordinary wisdom.
This fifth and final volume was intended to be the synthesis of the works preceding it. Its eminently practical purpose was to draw on the various facets explored in the previous volumes in order to demonstrate how Vedic understandings can assist today's troubled world. The author intended to reveal the 'blueprint' for a harmonious, balanced society that had been developed by the Vedic seer-scientists (rishis) in the light of their intellectual and experiential knowledge of the true nature of the cosmos. The aim was to help the global community address some of the most pernicious social ills in the contemporary world and move towards a greater harmony and mutual understanding.
