Book Description

Back of the Book:

Where Shall We Go This Summer is an intense story of a sensitive young wife torn between the desire to abandon the boredom the hypocrisy of her middle class and ostensibly comfortable existence, and the realization that the bound that bind her to it cannot easily be broken.

REVIEW:

'Skilful dramatization …. The narrative is precariously perched between myth and social reality……. For the talent itself, as the novel evidences, is exceptional in its innate sensibility and awareness of the craft of fiction.'

Times of India.

'The author has a deep understanding of human emotions. The character come alive in the novelist's skilled hands.'

Indian Express.

About the Author:

ANITA DESAI (nee Mazumbar) was born in 1937 in Mussorie, India, to a German mother and an Indian father. She grew up in Delhi, speaking English, Hindi and Urdu, and published her first story at the age of nine.

Desai made her debut as a novelist in 1963 with Cry, The Peacock and followed it up with Voices In The City (both in Orient Paperbacks). Honored with numerous awards, Fasting, Feasting is the third of her works to be short listed for Booker Prize. She writes in English saying, 'I first learnt English when I went to school. It was the first language I learned to read and write, so it became my literary language.'

Most of her novels are set in India and completely immersed in Indian life. Prof Alan Lightman of Writing & Humanistic Studies, MIT, comments, 'her novels are distinguished by her focus on the inner life of her character and her concern with people previously marginalized in Indian fiction, primarily women, children and the elderly.'
