Book Description
About the Author

Bijay Kishore Sundar Ray was born on 1st June, 1949 and belongs to Bhubaneswar. He joined the Indian Administrative Service in 1972 and retired in the rank of Chief Secretary to the Government of Chhattisgarh.

His poetry collection "When You Stand Alone", is a reflection of the fundamental feelings of B.K.S. Ray. All his poems seem to be straight from his heart, a flow that indicates a deep concern for a suffering humanity.

The English poet William Wordsworth wrote, "Poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings". B.K.S. Ray, as a poet, enthusiastically walks in his footsteps.

His poetry collection, "When You Stand Alone", reveals the human spirit of courage and resilience against existential threat, love for humanity and human feelings and a relentless struggle against injustice and oppression, a blistering attack on hypocrisy and a strong opposition to a selfish, commercial world. A longing for peace, and a strong opposition to war, aggression and all kinds of brutalities happen to be the core values of his poetic thought process.

He has been influenced by the writings of T.S. Eliot, D.H. Lawrence, Sylvia Plath, William Golding, Andrew Motion, W.H. Auden, Pablo Neruda and Octavio Paz.

"As a writer, I'm unstoppable", says Ray. He's an author of 52 books that include poetry, novels, short stories, dramas and essays on contemporary affairs.

"I'm a prolific writer due to the love and support of my readers" says Ray.

After his retirement from the I.A.S., B.K.S. Ray has settled down in Raipur, Chhattisgarh where he pursues his scholastic activities relentlessly.

Preface

"The poet writes of personal or fictitious experiences, but these are not important in themselves until the reader has realised them in his own consciousness", wrote the British poet W.H. Auden. To speak the truth, a poet owes a lot to his readers in terms of his creative strength and it is this relationship that remains decisive in a poet's life.

I write poetry for my own happiness and to bring cheers and happiness to others. Being a poet, I'm someone who expresses his unwavering commitment to humanity.

According to my perceptions, smiles and tears of the humanity will always influence the poetic world of a poet! And a world in turbulence can't escape a poet's attentions!

In my poetry collection, "When I Stand Alone", ideas dear to my heart find their expressions. I've highlighted the importance of human courage and resilience against heavy odds, fight against injustice and oppression, a deep hatred for greed and hypocrisy, a strong condemnation of war, violence and all kinds of brutalities, a constant longing for peace and happiness, and my fear over the emergence of a commercial world that promotes greed and selfishness, and degrades fundamental human feelings!

Poetry is one of the fundamental expressions to my existence. Writing poetry, in fact, is a happiness extraordinary!

I take this opportunity to express my heartfelt thanks to all my readers, friends, relatives and well-wishers who've always encouraged me to write more and more poetry. My poetry collection "When You Stand Alone", is a tribute to their constant inspiration and encouragement. I express my hearty thanks and gratitude to them for encouraging my creative journey.
