About the Book
This book is interesting for the students of philosophy and the lovers of philosophical wisdom. As the title indicates, it includes a discussion of the various schools concerning Epistemology and Metaphysics. The problems of both these fields have been discussed in various chapters according to particular schools of philosophy in the West in the first part of this book. These schools include Idealism, Realism, Absolutism, Empiricism, Rationalism, Logical, Positivism, Analysis, Phenomenology. Existentialism and Pragmatism. The second part is concerned with Indian Metaphysics and Epistemology it includes a discussion of the various problems such as Pramana and Pramanya, Theories of truth and error; Philosophy of Language and Meaning, Theories of reality, with reference to main systems (Orthodox and Heterodox) of Philosophy.

Thus the scope of this book includes syllabi prescribed in philosophy by Indian universities. Besides a text book it gives a general idea of the subject to the readers. Thus, it is useful for competitors in P.C.S. and I.A.S. and also universities students of philosophy.

Preface
Philosophy has been a paying and interesting subject in Indian Administrative examinations ever since the beginning of this competition. It is a pity that no book has been published covering the courses prescribed for L.A.S. main. It is simply for the love of the subject on the part of the author that the present text book for PHILOSOPHY (CODE NO.35) Paper Ist: METAPHYSICS AND EPISTEMOLOGY, has been prepared. The publisher deserves congratulations from all lovers of philosophy for taking up the publication of this text book. He deserves all cooperation from the teachers of philosophy by recommending this book to the students. It is hoped that this book will serve as the basic reading text for the aspirants for LA.S. offering philosophy as a main subject.
