Introduction
Since time immemorial, we can see in the pious land of Bharat-varsha (India), which has a great heritage of Vedic culture and wisdom. In this land, great personalities appeared and taught us how to attain peace and tranquility which is most required in these days. One of those personalities is Srila Vyasadeva, who originally compiled the Vedic wisdom. The final, most perfect and sublime work by Srila Vyasadeva is Srimad-Bhagavatam, which is the natural commentary on the Vedanta-Sutra. There is also the Bhagavad-gita, which was spoken by the Lord Himself and recorded by Srila Vyasadeva.
After that, in this Age of Kali, which is full of quarrel and hypocrisy, the Lord appeared as Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, who is no other than Krsna Himself. He taught us the simple and sublime pro- cess to attain the Supreme Personality of Godhead. That process is chanting of the Hare Krsna Mahamantra “Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare.” Lord Caitanya said that this Holy Name should be spread in as many towns and villages as there are. Lord Caitanya predicted
prthivite ache yata nagaradi grama
sarvatra pracara haibe mora nama
“In every town and village, the chanting of My name will be heard.” (Caitanya-bhagavata, Antya 4.126)
This great desire of Lord Caitanya was fulfilled by His great devotee and spiritual commander in chief, A.C. Bhaktivedanta Srila Prabhupada. For this age, Srila Prabhupada, taking the essential truths or the timeless Vedic wisdom of India and communicating them live to all persons, delivered this transcendental knowledge with maximum impact and precision.
In one of his purports, Srila Prabhupada writes, “Vedanta is the last word in Vedic wisdom, and the author and knower of the Vedanta philosophy is Lord Krsna and the highest Vedantist is the great soul who takes pleasure in chanting the holy name of the Lord. That is the ultimate purpose of all Vedic mysticism.” (BG 2.46)
Lord Krsna spoke the essence of Vedic wisdom and the confidential knowledge in the Bhagavad-gita:
sri-bhagavan uvaca
idam tu te guhyatamam pravahsyamy anasuyave
jnanam vijnana-sahitam nyaj jnatva moksyase ‘subhat
The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: My dear Arjuna, because you are never envious of Me, I shall impart to you this most confidential knowledge and realization, knowing which you shall be relieved of the miseries of material existence.
Srila Prabhupada has simplified the teachings of Bhagavad-gita for our understanding. If we really want to understand the message of Bhagavad-gita, then we must study the “Bhagavad-gita as it is” by Srila Prabhupada which is available in all important languages.
We feel great happiness to present this book called “Waves of Wisdom,” which is compiled from the lectures of our beloved Spiritual Master, Srila Gopal Krsna Goswami Maharaja, who is one of the prominent disciples of Srila Prabhupada. For our understanding, he delivers lectures on Srimad-Bhagavatam which is an ancient Sanskrit Scripture that contains the essence of all Vedic wisdom, describing the teachings of the Lord’s devotees as well as those of the Lord in many of His incarnations.
This book is a valuable addition to the ever-expanding literary spiritual legacy produced by Srila Prabhupada and his followers. By reading and following these instructions, we can easily attain our real goal of life, which is Krsna prema.
We sincerely thank Sammohini Rupa Devi Dasi, Ananda Dasa, Gopiswar Dasa and Govardhan Dasa for editing and proofreading.
I also thank Anuttama Hari Dasa for arranging the design and layout, and Draupadirani Devi Dasi for transcribing the lectures for this book. Also like to thank Ajayanath Dasa for designing beautiful cover page.
