Book Description
About the book

The objective of writing this book is to highlight India's relations with her neighbouring countries such as Pakistan, China and Bangladesh and to show how through different wars India survives as a strong nation and to demonstrate how competently the country's leadership had been handling the various challenges in the last quarter of the twentieth century and continues to do so in the first decade of the twentyfirst century. India's independence in 1947, unfortunately, did not mean the end of all the troubles. Since 1947 the Indian people have been forced to bear the brunt of Pakistan-piloted wars. The present problems like proxy-war, cross-border terrorism and Pakistan-inspired terrorist activities in Kashmir have been troubling the leadership and the people of India without end. China and Bangladesh, two other neighbours, have time and again troubled India. Events like the Kargil war and the terrorist attack on India's Parliament had to be faced by the Indians with great valour and determination. Moreover, events like the terrorist attack in America on September 11, 2001 and the Afghan war too have had many repercussions resulting in additional complications for India.

Apart from the confrontations with the neighbours the task of liberating areas like Goa, Daman and Diu, Pondicherry and similar territories from foreign occupation, even after India's independence, had been arduous.

All these issues have been dealt with in this book in a concise but penetrating manner. Of special value is the section on 'Proxy-War and Cross-Border Terrorism'.

The book is a must for any collection on modern Indian history and polity.

PREFACE

ndia which is boasting of its continuity of culture has survived all through the turmoils and tribulations. From the remote past one or other foreign power tried to creep in to India and to send its roots deep into its soil. Beginning from the Persians and Greeks, the trend continued with the Sakas, Hunas, Prathiharas, Kushanas, Mongoloids and then the Turks and Afghans. Again the trend continued in the modern period with the arrival of the Portuguese, Dutch, French and the English.

The British after ruling most parts of India for almost 250 years transferred the batton of Independence to the mutilated country, which was divided into India and Pakistan. Since 1947 till today, India and her subjects are forced to bear the brunt of Pak piloted Wars and again the Proxy War and cross-border terrorism.

Then, more often than getting Independence to British India, the country had to work hard for the liberation of Portuguese and French colonies. At the sametime, China and Bangladesh, two other neighbours time and again troubled India. But these topics received only cursory treatment from most of the historians.

Above all, the present problems like proxy-War, cross- border terrorism, the Kashmir issue, terrorist strike on WTC, Afghan War and repercussions on India and such other problems are still haunting India making every Indian turn his attention towards all these things which the country is facing throughout the year.

Today the major chunk of the national fund is diverted towards the security-related problems. As a result, most of her subjects are still under BPL. To march forward and to become one of the superpowers of the World, India needs a long-term plan, which in turn should be based on her previous history. Only with the availability of correct and comprehensive history, the past blunders may be rectified.

While considering these aspects, I felt that, there is the need for a comprehensive book giving all these details. The lack of an up to date book on these aspects compelled me take up this work.
