Vrksayurveda is the ancient subject of Plant life sciences of India that combines modern subjects of Agriculture, Botany. Agro-meteorology. Soil Sciences and Agro-ecology. The pre-requisite to this science is the basic knowledge of Dravyaguna (Ayruveda pharmacology) and Jyotisa sastra. This book attempts to explore the Ayurvedic Framework of Plants for their quality production and disease management techniques.
There is only one ancient copy on palm leaves of Surapala's Vrksayurveda (c.1000 AD) in the world preserved at the Bodleian Library, Oxford University, UK. YL Nene obtained a microfiche in 1994 from the Bodleian Library. A printout was then obtained using the microfiche. A Bulletin with Sanskrit text, its English translation, and commentaries by scientists was published in 1996 by AAHF.
The basic principles of Ayurveda come from the Caraka Samhita, one of the oldest complete manuscripts available today. Since Ayurveda is not some pseudo-science and the principles of Ayurveda are accurate and based on the Pancamahabhuta, all plants and animals are also made from the Pancamahabhuta.
Ayurveda is based on curing Tridoșa (Vata, Pitta and Kapha) which again involves pairing two Tattva out of the Panca-mahabhuta. Now, animals and plants are also part of this system. It means that if we can characterize the Vata, Pitta and Kapha triad for plants and animals, we can cure them too. The good news is that there are existing ancient texts regarding this.
Vaidya Surapala's work Vṛksayurveda and Cakrapaņi Misra's work Viśvavallabha are monumental works in Botanical Science and Agroecology.
