माध्यमिक दर्शन के प्रवर्तक आचार्य नागार्जुन विरचित 'मूलमध्यमककारिका' नामक ग्रन्थ के परिषपूरक रूप में प्रसिद्ध 'विग्रहव्यावर्तनी-कारिका' में कुल 72 कारिकायें विद्यमान हैं। ग्रन्थकार ने ग्रन्थ के पूर्वार्ध्व में बौद्ध एवं अबौद्ध उभय मतवादियों के द्वारा प्रक्षिप्त आपत्ति एवं आलोचना पर प्रकाश डाला तथा द्वितीयार्ध्व में उन्होंने उक्त आपत्ति एवं आलोचना का उचित एवं तर्कसंगत ढंग से उत्तर प्रस्तुत किया।

भूमिका
आचार्य नागार्जुन महायान बौद्ध जगत् में माध्यमिक दर्शन के प्रतिष्ठाता के रूप में प्रसिद्ध है। वे आर्य नागार्जुन के नाम से भी जाने जाते हैं। वे गम्भीर दृष्टि-परम्परा के स्थापक, कोआन्टाम तत्त्व के विकासक एवं नालन्दा के सत्रह बौद्ध पण्डितों में अग्रदूत रहे। महायान बौद्ध जगत् में वे द्वितीय बुद्ध के रूप में गण्य है। जम्बूद्वीप के षडलंकारों में से वे सर्वश्रेष्ठ रहे। उन्होंने असंख्य कल्प पूर्व बोधिचित्त को उत्पन्न किया। मध्य में उन्होंने अनभिलाप्य लोकधातु में निवास करने वाले असंख्य प्राणियों का कल्याण करते हुए पुण्य संचय किया। अन्त में जगत्कल्याण तथा तथागत बुद्ध के पवित्र धर्म के प्रचार व संरक्षण हेतु इस जम्बूद्वीप में आविर्भूत हुए। बुद्ध के विभिन्न सूत्रों में उनके आविर्भाव होने की भविष्यवाणियाँ उपलब्ध हैं।

About the Author
Born in a middle class family in West Bengal, Prof. (Dr.) Sanjib Kumar Das was educated at Chandpara Nimna Buniyadi Vidyalaya (Amtala) and then in Gobardanga Khantura High School. Meanwhile, due to some of his personal problems, he fled away from home and worked as a waiter in several hotels and sweet shops for about two years in Kolkata. Later, he went to Darjeeling and took shelter in a Buddhist Monastery where he also worked as a helper of mason for about a year. There, an auspicious coincidence came upon in his life that also totally changed his life as well. On account of the kindness of the Thupten Sanga Choling Monastery, he was admitted in its branch school named Drukpa Kagyű Destitute Home' where he studied upto standard VIII. Subsequently, he was sent to Varanasi in 1989 in order to get admission in the then Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies, Sarnath for higher studies. Getting admission, he obtained MA., pursuing upon Tibetan Buddhism, Tibetan Language and other prescribed subjects. In 1998, he was awarded with the Kashi Naresh Gold Medal for being the best student of 1998. After completing MA., he started doing his Ph.D. which he completed in 2002. In 1999, he was invited as a Translator from Tibetan into English to Taiwan where he stayed for about five months. In 2002, he got a temporary job in the Translation Department in the CIHTS, Sarnath and simultaneously a permanent job in Central Institute of Buddhist Studies, Leh where he worked for about six years. In 2008, he got a new job in Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan where he has been working on the post of Professor in the Department of Indo-Tibetan Studies. Apart from his academic works, Prof. Das was also carried out the responsibility of HOD [Head of the Department), Department of Indo-Tibetan Studies twice, for about ten years, I/C Director, Centre for Buddhist Studies for three years and Vice-Principal, Bhasha-Bhavana, Visva-Bharati for two years. Prof. Das has also composed, translated, edited, restored and compiled several books which have been published by different universities, institutions and publishers in India. Similarly, he also undertook the four Tibetan-Bengali Translation Projects funded by ACLS, USA & FPMT, USA as well as English-Bengali Translation Project funded by Berzin Archives, Germany for two years during the Covid period. Apart from translation, compilation, restoration and editing work, Prof. Das attended number of Local, National and International seminars, and presented papers.

Introduction
Nāgārjuna, also known as Ācārya Nāgārjuna or Arya Nāgārjuna, is renowned in the Mahāyāna Buddhist world as the proponent of the Madhyamika School of Buddhist Philosophy. He was the pioneer of the lineage of profound teachings of emptiness (Skt. Gambhira-drști-paramparā; Wyl. zab mo lta brgyud), developer of quantum theory and the world-famous adept among the seventeen Indian Buddhist Masters. Revered as the second Buddha in the Mahāyāna Buddhist world, he holds a prominent place among the 'Six Ornaments Beautifying Jambūdvīpa (Southern Continent)'. Cultivating his altruistic thought countless kalpas ago, he accumulated merits over numerous kalpas by bringing welfare to limitless sentient beings residing in the inexpressible world systems. Finally, he manifested in Jambūdvīpa for the purpose of benefiting sentient beings and preserving the sacred Dharma of the Buddha, as prophesized in several sūtras of the Buddha.
