Vidyadhar Pundalik (1924-1989) was a worthy successor to the pioneers of post war Marathi short story. He also wrote plays, character sketches and appreciative and critical articles. His literary work is marked by an intense consciousness of overall form and subtle psychological probings. The spectrum of emotions he deals with is wide; it ranges from the playful to the deeply moving and tragic. He can plumb the depths of the most profound emotion as easily as he can capture the evanescence of a fleeting mood. He had a special fascination for the transcendent and the suprarational element in life. His play Mata Draupadi has been acclaimed as a high watermark of Marathi drama. In this book his life-long friend and critic ably reviews his work.
