Book Description

Preface

Without mathematics there is no living and no civilization. For instance, measuring time guides us through every moment of our lives even though we are not conscious of it all the while.

There is another significant aspect about mathematics. The process of learning mathematics tunes pupil's mind to think in a logical and analytical way. Logical and analytical faculties would not only be helpful in one's own profession but also be useful in facing other challenges as well.

Contrary to the misguided notion, mathematics is the simplest of all sciences, easy to comprehend. With little more effort, teachers of mathematics, particularly at the primary and middle school levels can dispel this unsubstantiated fear from the minds of children.

It is in this context, I look at the great utility of Vedic mathematics. Vedic thinkers invented and conceptualized several ideas such as number system, counting, basic operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division in the simplest possible ways, the solar system, planetary motion etc. Apart from these outstanding contributions, our ancestors gave to the mankind an amazing gift, the concept of zero. The quest for taking mathematical knowledge to great heights continued in post Vedic period as well and continued till 12th century. Varahamihira, Aryabhatta, Bhaskara, Mahavira and others took forward mathematics further and made monumental contributions in the areas of algebra, calculus, geometry and astronomy.

The long colonial rule on oneside and the rapid advance of sciences in the west on the other pushed our ancient knowledge of mathematics and other sciences into oblivion. However during 20th century efforts were made by scholars to reinvent Vedic mathematics. Several articles and books published in recent decades created zeal among scholars all over the country to rediscover the long neglected knowledge.

Foreword

The subject of Vedic Mathematics has become a household name in recent years. In fact it is very ancient and is known in India for several thousands of years. The term Vedic mathematics indicates that mathematics which has its origin in the Vedas. Then, what is Veda? Veda means knowledge, which includes both the spiritual knowledge and worldly knowledge.

Lagadha, the great mathematician of India of about 1500b.c., states in his book of Vedanga Jyotisha that Like the crest of a peacock, and like the gems on the hoods of serpants, the mathematics lies at the top of all knowledge systems.

Our sages in ancient times discovered several mathematical principles in our Vedic literature. Recently, in 1960s, Swami Bharati Krishna Tirtha of Govardhan peeth of Puri Jagannath, authored a book titled Vedic Mathematics.

ADVANTAGES OF LEARNING VEDIC MATHEMATICS BY THE STUDENTS OF MODERN EDUCATION

1. Vedic mathematics helps to eliminate the phobia of many school children who consider mathematics as a difficult subject. 2. Vedic maths is easy to learn, faster to use and less prone to errors.

3. Highly useful for competitive examinations.

4. Provides one line answers, using mental and super fast methods.

5. Offers a new approach based on pattern recognition.

6. Develops student's creativity with a high degree of mathematical ability,

7. Carries great educational value.

GOLDEN NANDI AWARD FOR VEDIC MATHEMATICS

We are happy to inform that we commenced gathering the data related to Vedic mathematics in 1972, and subsequently published series of articles in various journals. Further we got an opportunity to teach the subject of Vedic mathematics at mass level in Andhra Pradesh, through Bhakti TV, Pooja TV, Hindu Dharmam Channels etc., Incidentally, this program was adjudged as the "First Best Educational TV Programme for the year 2008, and Golden Nandi Award was presented to us by Govt. of Andhra Pradesh.

BOOK SERIES FOR STUDENTS OF VARIOUS CLASSES

With this background, a series of books on Vedic mathematics are prepared by us, for the benefit of students, keeping the average absorption capacity of the students in view.

Introduction

1. Introduction to Vedic Mathematics

The term Vedic mathematics indicates that mathematics which is related to the Vedas. Then, what is Veda? Veda means knowledge, which includes both the spiritual knowledge and worldly knowledge. The Holy Vedas are the principal and primary sacred texts of the followers of Sanatana dharma. They are believed to be eternal truths of the cosmos revealed to the sages during their penance. They are believed to be of great antiquity dating back to beginning of time itself. The Vedas are the grand heritage- the origin of all sciences and knowledge systems.

MATHEMATICS IN VEDAS & VEDANGAS In addition to the intellectual debates of highest level, like Upanishads, on various aspects of spiritual knowledge, the Vedas extensively deal with the rituals also for the upliftment of the humanity. These rituals involve several topics which are directly related to the mathematics. Hence a thorough knowledge of mathematics is essential for proper performance of the rituals.

The books of Vedas and Vedangas involve mathematics extensively. The Kalpa, dealing with the preparation of altars, or yajnavedikas, utilizes several geometrical principles, which are called Sulba sutras. Presently few of them traced are in the names of Boudhayana, Apastamba, Katyayana and others.

Because of the vast coverage of mathematics and its significance, the Jyotisha is adored from times immemorial. Lagadha, the great mathematician of India of about 1500b.c., states in his book of Vedanga Jyotisha that "Like the crest of a peacock, and like the gems on the hoods of serpants, the mathematics lies at the top of all knowledge systems.

Similarly the Chandas has lot of knowledge related to the mathematics related to the permutations and combinations. MATHEMATICIANS OF INDIA

Our sages, who discovered the mathematical principles, include Surya, Pitamaha, Vasishtha, Medhatithi, Garga, Lomasa, Chyavana and several others. In addition to the sages, we have a long list of astronomer-cum- mathematicians like Varahamihira, Aryabhata, Bhaskaracharya I, Bhaskaracharya II, Brahmagupta, Mahaviracharya, Kalakacharya, Prithuyasas, Pavuluri Mallanna and a host of others.

SPREAD OF VEDIC MATHEMATICS TO OTHER COUNTRIES

In course of time, the literature related to mathematics was taken from India to foreign countries. In fact a mathematician by name Kanka of Ujjain was taken to Arab countries and was requested to translate the books of mathematics from Sanskrit to Arabic language. It is said that Alzafer, under whose name the subject of Algebra is popular, adopted the Sanskrit numerals for the digits in his works.

Subsequently the subject of Indian mathematics spread to Spain, Germany, France, England and other countries.

NAMES OF INDIAN MATHEMATICIANS SUPPRESSED

During the foreign rule, the same mathematics was introduced through English language, in the curriculum in India, but with the names of original Indian contributors suppressed.

For illustration, the Boudhayana siddhanta, related to the areas of the sides of a right angled triangle, is now known in the name of Pythogorus of about 500 b.c., who was born about three centuries after Boudhayana.

The theorem of interpolation, introduced by Govinda Swami of 300 b.c., is now known in the names of Newton and Gauss, born after a gap of about 1800 years.
