Book Description

Publishers Note

The booklet now published contains an original commentary on the "Pratahsmarana Stotra" or Morning Meditation Hymn by Sri Bhagavatpada, generally identified with the famous Shankaracharya.

While we have no satisfactory means of ascertaining whether or not the hymn is really the production of the well-known writer of the celebrated commentaries on the Classical Upanishads, the Bhagavadgita and the Vedanta Sutras, the style and subject-matter of the work incline us to believe in its genuineness.

The main object of the hymn is to commend, to aspirants after the Highest Goal of Human Life, the meditation of the Supreme Reality underlying the Universe as their very Self.

The Commentator Sri Sri Satchidanandendra Saraswati Swamiji has, in his own inimitable style, Developed the theme in a thought-arresting manner, and shows how the hymn really condenses the most essential doctrines of the Advaita Vedanta in three short verses. His presentation of the subject in the form of a dialogue between master and pupil, rouses and sustains the interest of the curious reader till he comes to the very end of the book.

We hope that the reading of this brochure, will prove an earnest attempt to students of Vedanta to study the larger works of the Swamiji such as Sugama and the Mandukya Rahasya Vivriti.

We have been asked to convey Sri Swami Narayana Smaranams to the following Pandits who have helped the author by offering useful suggestions: Pandita Pravara Sri Kodur Krishna Jois, Asthana Vidwan of Sringeri Peetha ; Pandita Pravara H. Ananta Murty Sastri, Tarka Professor, Sanskrit College, Bangalore ; Vedanta Siromani S. Vittala Sastry, Astana Vidwan, Mysore Palace and Vedanta Siromani Parakkaje Subrahmanya Bhatta.
