Book Description
About The Book

The Kama Sutra is an ancient Indian Hindu text widely considered to be the standard work on human sexual behavior in Sanskrit literature written by Mallanaga Vätsyayana. The Kama Sutra is neither exclusively a sex manual nor, as also commonly used art, a sacred or religious work. It is certainly not a tantric text. In opening with a discussion of the three aims of ancient Hindu life-dharma, artha and kama Vatsyayana's purpose is to set kama, or enjoyment of the senses, in context. Thus dharma or virtuous living is the highest aim, artha, the amassing of wealth is next, and kama is the least of three.

Preface

In the literature of all countries there will be found a certain number of works treating especially of love. Every- where the subject is dealt with differently, and from various points of view In the present publication it is proposed to give a complete translation of what is considered the stan- dard work on love in Sanskrit literature, and which is called the Vatsyayana Kama Sutra', or Aphorisms on Love, by Vatsyayana.

While the introduction will deal with the evidence conceming the date of the writing, and the commentaries written upon it, the chapters following the introduction advisable to furnish here a brief analysis of works of the same nature, prepared by authors who lived and wrote years after Vatsya had passed away, but who still him as the chief guide to Hindoo erotic literature.
