Book Description
About the Book
One of the greatest Indian epics of all time, the Ramayana, or 'The Journey of Rama', is ostensibly the story of Rama of Ayodhya the prince who spent fourteen years in exile to honour his father's wish the many battles he valiantly fought to overcome evil in various shapes and forms and, last but not the least, the heroic choices he made in order to always remain on the path of righteousness.

'Adi-Kavi' Valmiki presents a Rama who is more human than godlike, riven by loss and sorrow as he loses his beloved Sita, first to the evil designs of Ravana, whom Rama later defeats in a terrible battle, and then to Mother Earth, who opens up to enfold Sita forever after the Agnipariksha she is made to go through to prove her chastity.

While Rama embodies all that is good and honourable, a vast array of characters ranging from celestial beings to demons to wondrous talking animals populate the epic, each with its own raison d'etre, adding complexity to an apparently simple tale of good vanquishing evil.

Valmiki Ramayana, multilayered and often symbolic, encompasses the most important aspects of ancient Indian culture-a value system based on honour and duty, the burdens of kingship, social and filial ideals and has at its heart the concept of Dharma.

With its ample use of quotations, explanations of style, technique and imagery, this translation by Rajendra Tandon succeeds in bringing out the beauty and majestic sweep of the Ramayana. Poetry, prose and illustrations combine to make this volume a book lover's delight.

His many areas of interest include Indian history, Indian miniature painting, astronomy, fine arts, classical music and gardening. He is also keenly interested in homoeopathy and firmly believes in alternative healing treatments.

Preface
It started with Valmiki who wrote the story of Rama and his journey, [Rama +'ayana', that is, 'going, advancing'], and named his magnum opus 'Ramayana'. Many other poets have written their own epics, the most famous being Tulsidasa's Ramacharitamanasa written in Awadhi Devanagri. Radhe Shyam Kathavachak of Bareilly wrote his own text and used to recite to gatherings of thousands in various towns of India. Several other Ramayanas were written in South India. From Kashmir to Kanyakumari, in every part of India, we read, enact or recite the Ramayana in one version or the other.

Prologue
The Vedas, the most ancient known literature of India, carry interesting astronomical information of historical importance. The Samhita, Brahmaņa, Aranyaka, texts of all the four Vedas (Rk, Yajus, Sama and Atharva) describe the visible sky, seasons, lunar and solar phenomena and a variety of natural events including felt effect of axial precession of earth in either figurative or matter-of-fact language. Many of the Vedic rituals derive inspiration for their concept, design and execution from natural phenomena described in the above texts. A particular topic that is often invoked, discussed and pondered upon by Vedic seers is Time, both the abstract and the concrete, in its various implications. This preoccupation with Time is closely related with rtam, the natural rhythm associated with the visibility cycles of celestial bodies, and their spatial location in the sky as seen from earth. That Time is continuous like a flowing river but experienced in terms of discrete elemental units such as nimeșa, muhūrta, ahoratra, pakşa, māsa, rtu, ayana, samvatsara, yuga is stated in several Vedic texts. It is very likely that the major rituals in the Vedas were originally designed to measure or distinguish between time periods. whereas some rites were prescribed to be observed on specific dates, predicted possibly in advance.
