The Vachanamrut is the principal shastra of the Swaminarayan Sampradaya. It is a compilation of 273 spiritual discourses delivered by Bhagwan Swaminarayan from 1819 CE to 1829 CE. It is a Hindu Shastra filled with infallible logic, illuminating analogies and metaphors, and divine revelations that provide philosophical and practical answers to the deepest mysteries and questions of life. The Vachanamrut was first translated and published in English by the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha in 1977. This challenging task was achieved through the diligent and meticulous efforts of Shri H.T. Dave, who was continually inspired and guided by Yogiji Maharaj and Pramukh Swami Maharaj. He worked from the original Gujarati text published by Swaminarayan Aksharpith, which itself is a letter-to-letter, printed version of the original, authentic manuscript published in 1928 under the auspices of Acharya Shripatiprasadji of Vartal.
The second English edition of the Vachanamrut was a completely new, revised translation made by a team of sadhus from the original Gujarati text published by Swaminarayan Aksharpith. The work of translation began in September 1996 with initial meetings to discuss methods and conventions, and concluded in September 2001 with the blessings of His Divine Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj, who continually supplied invaluable inspiration to complete the monumental task. .
In the third edition, previously italicized non-English words that have been incorporated in the Oxford English Dictionary (2004 edition) were converted to normal type and removed from the glossary. .
The fourth edition also featured further improvements to the text, and was presented in a smaller, more portable size which readers found practical and convenient. .
This pocket edition is an even smaller size, but still contains the text, footnotes, glossary and appendices as in the larger editions. It is presented in three separate parts, thus further increasing the portability while still providing a pleasant reading experience. .
