The traditional principles of ordering which are collected together in the paribhasa (Pbh) works like the Paribhasendusekhara of Nagesa are over-generalized and complex in character. However these principles are used to solve the cases of vipratisedha.
The present work claims that we can solve the cases of vipratisedha by the principle of utsargaapavada only. This version of the utsargaapavada relation which differs from the tradition, accurately determines to which rule priority is to be given. With respect to the question whether all cases of vipratisedha can be resolved by resorting to the principle of utsargaapavada, the answer is that the utsargaapavada principle can solve the great majority of the vipratisedha cases.

I submitted the thesis 'Utsargapavada Relation in the Astadhyayi to the Savitribai Phule, University of Pune (then University of Pune) in 1985. However I could not manage to revise it for publication. From 1985 till date I completed several major projects, published many research papers and from time to time I used to read and revise the thesis. Finally the work is seeing the daylight. This particular topic came into my mind when I was in M.A. and Prof. S.D. Joshi was teaching the Siddhantakaumudi to us. The Paribhasa paranityantarangapavadanam uttarottaram baliyah caught my mind. As an answer to my several questions, queries and doubts he suggested me to pursue this topic for my Ph.D. degree.
From bottom of my heart express my gratefulness to Dr. S.D. Joshi who was not only my guide for this work, but also a 'guru' for whom research and teaching Panini were life-time involvements. It is his inspiration which made me to carry on my work.
When I decided to publish this work Dr. Saroja Bhate helped and guided me from time to time. My sincere thanks are also due to Prof. Dr. Saroja Bhate.
My sincere thanks are also due to my parents and my family members who made this stupendously involving job easy for me.
I cannot forget my colleagues in Vaidika Samshodhana Mandal, Pune where I am working from January 2000. They handle all the matter such as administration, Library, correspondence, accounts etc. which facilitated me to carry my research work.
Had Prof. Anantacharya Panchamukhi not insisted on publication of this work I would not have completed the ready to press copy of it. This is my privilege that this work is being published as the centenary series of the renowned Institute Karnataka Historical Research Society, Dharwar.
I will be failing in my duty if I do not thank most gratefully Mrs. Kanchan Ghate and Mrs. Madhuri Kudale who did the tedious work of DTP and page setting very neatly and competently.
I also thank the authorities of S.P. University of Pune for granting me a permission to publish the thesis (vide letter No. PGS/7472 dt. 17.07.2002).
I conclude this note with regret in my heart that Prof. Dr. S.D. Joshi, is no more to see the publication of the research that completed under his guidance.
