The Kutab Khana Khawateen-e-Deccan and Idara-e-Tahqeeqat (Research Institute) was founded in the year 1943, The Library is not only meant for the ladies of Hyderabad, but also ladies outside Hyderabad take advantage of it. The Research Scholars and lovers of literature and learning too, derive benefit from it.
Formerly this library was the private library of Shri. Nasiruddin Hashmi. Later he got it registered and declared it open exclusively for the ladies of Hyderabad. A Research Institute also is attached to this library which has a twofold aim; that of study and review of the works and the elegant style of the old writers on one hand, and bringing into limelight the works on research of the women writers of the present day on the other hand by publishing their work and thereby adding more books to the already existing literary treasure.
The thesis submitted by the women Research Scholars for Doctorates are accepted by the University but inspite of being an important piece of work are not published and those fond of art and literature are thereby deprived of the pleasure and benefit they could derive from them. The Research Institute publishes such Theses by which the women writers having received Doctorate in their subjects, are also financially benefited by the sale of their works.
To start this work a monitary aid was granted to the Research Institute for the publications of two books by the Ministry of Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs of the Government of India, subject to the condition that a matching amount be spent by the Institute as well. Consequently two books have been published, abiding by this condition. I deem it my duty to thank those ladies and gentlemen who purchased and paid the cost of these books in advance and enabled us to publish these books.
Out of the books published one is the Thesis in Persian for Doctorate submitted by Smt. Shareefunnisa Begam. The subject of this Thesis is the life and works of Abu Talib Kaleem, a renowned Persian poet of the Durbar of Adilshah and later of the Court of Emperor Shah Jehan where the title of Poet Laureate was conferred upon him.
The other publications consists of two volumes and is concerned with exhaustive list of the Urdu Manuscripts in the State Central Library prepared by Shri. Nasiruddin Hashmi. This list is very beneficial for those research scholars who wish to get acquainted and take full advantage of the valuable literary treasures that are to be found in this library.
For purposes of studying the history of any language according to principles laid down, it is essential that an exhaustive list of all the material available is present. The state of Urdu literature is such that it is scattered over the whole length and breadth of India, consequently an approach to it is not easy. As such a bibliography of books became a necessity as a special science in the Western countries.
In Hyderabad, a brief list of Urdu manuscripts of the Osmania University has been published and a list of manuscripts of India office was published by Shri. Nasiruddin Hashmi under the name of "Europemen Deccani Mukhtutaať" i.e. Manuscripts of the Deccan in Europe, also an exhaustive list of manuscripts of Idara-e-Adabiat-e Urdu in five volumes have been published by Dr. Zore, a list of Urdu manuscripts of Salar Jung Library has also been prepared and published by Shri. Nasiruddin Hashmi. Besides these, the Urdu manuscripts of 'Jame Musjid of Bombay' has also been published under the able guidance and supervision of Prof. Najeeb Ashraf Nadvi. To this treasure, has been added the newly published list of the Urdu manuscripts of State Central Library prepared by Shri. Nasiruddin Hashmi with great care and hard work.
On behalf of the Research Institute it is my proud privilege to thank Shri. Humayun Kabir, the Hon'ble Minister for Research and Cultural affairs for his generous help to the above Institute. In conclusion I appeal to the Government of Andhra Pradesh to grant a generous annuity to this Institute in the cause of the furtherance of knowledge and the conservation of the old treasures of art and literature.

It was the Nineteenth Century that the work of publishing) catalogues of Urdu manuscripts was started and for this we are indebted to the Englishmen, Major Stewart and Dr. Springer who catalogued the lists of the libraries of Tipu Sultan and the kings of Oudh. In the 20th Century Prof. Blumhardt prepared the catalogue of the Urdu manuscripts of the India Office. All these catalogues were in English.
In 1829 Professor Abdul Qader Sarwari published a catalogue of 67 manuscripts of the Osmania University Library. It was the first catalogue in Urdu. The second catalogue was published by me under the title "Europe main Dakhni Maqtootat" (Dakhni Manuscripts in Europe). In this Catalogue of 714 pages I have dealt with 159 manuscripts.
